How to prevent and treat gestational diabetes
Fortunately, there are many things you can do to prevent gestational diabetes. First and foremost, you should try – preferably before you become pregnant – to lead a healthy lifestyle. A balanced diet plan and regular workouts or fitness for pregnant women will help prevent obesity and also strengthen your health. The sooner you start, the better.
If your gestational diabetes levels have already been determined and you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, here’s what you can do to keep your blood sugar levels low during pregnancy and avoid further complications:
- Stick to a healthy eating plan. Pregnant women should avoid losing weight. So what can and should you eat? Plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains are the best diet for gestational diabetes. It’s best to eat several smaller meals spread throughout the day and at regular times. Ask your health care provider about a diet plan that’s right for you to help regulate gestational diabetes levels, and find out how much weight you can gain during your pregnancy.
- Exercise. Physical activity and exercise will help you keep your blood sugar levels down during pregnancy. It also contributes to your overall fitness and health. Again, you can ask your health care provider what type of exercise is best for you during pregnancy. Jogging during pregnancy or yoga are often good choices. If your health care provider agrees, try a 30-minute moderate workout every day (five times a week).
- Taking medications. About 10% to 20% of women with gestational diabetes need to inject insulin to regulate their blood sugar levels. If necessary, your doctor will prescribe insulin. If you take it correctly and as prescribed, it will contribute significantly to the health of you and your little one!
