1 ½ tablespoons soy sauce (tamari for GF)
1 ½ tablespoons rice vinegar
2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons Shaoxing wine (Chinese cooking wine)

2 teaspoons black sesame seeds or toasted white sesame seeds
2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
¾ cup (12g) cilantro leaves and tender stems
roughly chopped
3 to 4 cups cooked white or brown rice
for serving
Instructions
- Press the tofu for 15-20 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut into bite-sized cubes.
- In a bowl, toss tofu cubes with kosher salt, white pepper, garlic powder, Chinese five spice powder, and cornstarch until evenly coated.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
- Add tofu cubes and cook until golden and crispy on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add remaining oil and stir-fry ginger and garlic for about 30 seconds.
- Add your choice of vegetables and stir-fry for 5-7 minutes or until just tender.
- In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, Shaoxing wine, brown sugar, chili-garlic sauce, and vegetable broth or water.
- Return the tofu to the skillet and pour the sauce over everything. Stir well to combine.
- To thicken, stir in the cornstarch mixed with cold water and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
- Finish with sesame oil, sesame seeds, and cilantro. Serve hot over cooked rice.
Notes
For a gluten-free version, use tamari instead of soy sauce and ensure the hoisin sauce is gluten-free. Feel free to mix and match vegetables based on your preference.
