Description

Sweet and Sour Chicken is a deliciously tangy dish featuring tender chicken pieces coated in a crispy texture, served with vibrant bell peppers, and tossed in a homemade sweet and sour sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 34 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • pounded to ½ inch thickness and chopped into 1 inch pieces
  • ⅓ cup corn starch
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper
  • chopped
  • ½ white or yellow onion
  • chopped
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion salt
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon corn starch
  • 2 tablespoons cold water

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, toss the chicken pieces with ⅓ cup of corn starch until evenly coated.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, add the chopped bell peppers and onion; sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, garlic powder, onion salt, ketchup, 1 tablespoon of corn starch, and cold water to create the sauce.
  5. Pour the sauce over the sautéed vegetables in the skillet and bring to a simmer. Cook until the sauce thickens slightly, about 2-3 minutes.
  6. Add the cooked chicken back into the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce. Cook for an additional 2 minutes to heat through.
  7. Serve the Sweet and Sour Chicken hot over rice or noodles, garnished with sesame seeds if desired.

Notes

For a spicier version, consider adding a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce.
