Description
Sweet and Sour Chicken is a deliciously tangy dish featuring tender chicken pieces coated in a crispy texture, served with vibrant bell peppers, and tossed in a homemade sweet and sour sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3–4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
- pounded to ½ inch thickness and chopped into 1 inch pieces
- ⅓ cup corn starch
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 red bell pepper
- chopped
- 1 green bell pepper
- chopped
- ½ white or yellow onion
- chopped
- ¾ cup sugar
- ½ cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion salt
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon corn starch
- 2 tablespoons cold water
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, toss the chicken pieces with ⅓ cup of corn starch until evenly coated.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
- Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, add the chopped bell peppers and onion; sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, garlic powder, onion salt, ketchup, 1 tablespoon of corn starch, and cold water to create the sauce.
- Pour the sauce over the sautéed vegetables in the skillet and bring to a simmer. Cook until the sauce thickens slightly, about 2-3 minutes.
- Add the cooked chicken back into the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce. Cook for an additional 2 minutes to heat through.
- Serve the Sweet and Sour Chicken hot over rice or noodles, garnished with sesame seeds if desired.
Notes
For a spicier version, consider adding a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce.
