- Red gel icing color
- 2 1/4 cups (504g) unsalted butter
- Chocolate Buttercream
- 8 cups (920g) powdered sugar
- 1 cup (114g) natural unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 5–7 tbsp (75-105ml) water/cream
- 1/4 tsp salt
- Black gel icing color
- 4 oz red Wilton candy melts
- 2 tbsp heavy whipping cream
- Sprinkles (see notes)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
- In a large bowl, beat together the butter, vegetable oil, and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
- Divide the batter in half. Melt the chopped chocolate and mix into one half of the batter until well combined.
- Scoop spoonfuls of each batter into the prepared cake pans, creating a marbled effect by swirling with a knife.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
- For the chocolate buttercream, beat together the butter and powdered sugar. Add cocoa powder, vanilla, and water/cream until the desired consistency is reached. Add black gel icing color to achieve a dark shade.
- Once cakes are cooled, frost with the chocolate buttercream.
- For the red drip, melt the candy melts with heavy whipping cream until smooth. Drizzle over the frosted cake. Top with sprinkles for a festive look.
Notes
Make sure to let the melted chocolate cool slightly before mixing it into the batter. Adjust the amount of gel coloring in the icing to achieve your desired spooky effect.
