Description

A hearty and comforting Slow Cooker Beef Stew that’s perfect for any occasion. Tender chunks of stew meat simmered with vegetables and rich flavors create a meal that’s satisfying and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ pounds stew meat
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic salt
  • ½ teaspoon celery salt
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 36 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons cold butter
  • 2 cups yellow onions
  • diced
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • minced
  • 1 cup cabernet sauvignon
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 2 beef bouillon cubes
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 5 medium carrots
  • cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 1 lb. baby Yukon gold potatoes
  • halved or quartered
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 sprig rosemary
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • ¼ cup cold water
  • 3 tablespoons corn starch
  • 23 drops Gravy Master

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the stew meat with black pepper, garlic salt, celery salt, and flour.
  2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Brown the floured meat in batches, adding butter as needed.
  3. Once the meat is browned, transfer it to a slow cooker. Add onions, garlic, cabernet sauvignon, beef broth, bouillon cubes, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, carrots, potatoes, bay leaves, and rosemary.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 4-5 hours, until meat and vegetables are tender.
  5. In the last 30 minutes of cooking, stir in the frozen peas. If a thicker stew is desired, combine cold water and corn starch in a bowl, then stir into the stew.
  6. Add gravy master for color, if desired, before serving.

Notes

Choose high-quality stew meat for the best flavor. Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot works well, but you can use any red wine you prefer. For a thicker stew, corn starch can be added at the end.
