Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract, eggs, and egg whites, mixing well.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, until just combined.
- Divide the batter into three bowls. Color one portion with red food coloring and another with blue food coloring. Leave the third bowl white.
- Spoon the colored batters into the prepared pans, creating a marbled effect by swirling with a knife.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool before removing from pans.
- Decorate with frosting as desired.
