- 1 & 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 tablespoon white sugar
- 1 & 1/2 tablespoons dry yeast
- 1 & 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 & 1/2 tablespoons butter
- softened
- 3–4 cups all purpose flour
- spooned and leveled
- 1 egg white
- optional
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until foamy.
- Add salt and softened butter, mixing until well blended.
- Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, kneading until a soft dough forms.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place in a greased loaf pan.
- Cover the loaf and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
- If desired, brush the top with egg white for a nice glaze.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
For a crustier bread, place a pan of water on the bottom rack of the oven while baking.
