Description

Ingredients

  • 1 & 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1 & 1/2 tablespoons dry yeast
  • 1 & 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 & 1/2 tablespoons butter
  • softened
  • 34 cups all purpose flour
  • spooned and leveled
  • 1 egg white
  • optional

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add salt and softened butter, mixing until well blended.
  3. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, kneading until a soft dough forms.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place in a greased loaf pan.
  6. Cover the loaf and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
  7. If desired, brush the top with egg white for a nice glaze.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

For a crustier bread, place a pan of water on the bottom rack of the oven while baking.
