- 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice

- diced or grated
- 3/4 cup pumpkin purée
- 1/3 cup buttermilk
- plus extra for brushing
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 2 to 3 teaspoons buttermilk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- optional: 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ginger or cardamom
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the pumpkin purée, buttermilk, and vanilla extract until just combined.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface, gently knead it a few times to bring it together, and pat it into a 1-inch thick circle.
- Cut into wedges or use a biscuit cutter to shape the scones, transferring them to the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush the tops with a little extra buttermilk and bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown.
- For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, buttermilk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Drizzle over warm scones before serving.
Notes
For a spiced variation, feel free to add the optional ground spices to the glaze. These scones are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a few days.
