  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup very cold salted butter
  • diced or grated
  • 3/4 cup pumpkin purée
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the pumpkin purée, buttermilk, and vanilla extract until just combined.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface, gently knead it a few times to bring it together, and pat it into a 1-inch thick circle.
  6. Cut into wedges or use a biscuit cutter to shape the scones, transferring them to the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Brush the tops with a little extra buttermilk and bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown.
  8. For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, buttermilk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Drizzle over warm scones before serving.

Notes

For a spiced variation, feel free to add the optional ground spices to the glaze. These scones are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a few days.
