This French Onion Meatloaf combines the savory flavors of caramelized onions, tangy Worcestershire sauce, and rich Gruyère cheese for a comforting twist on a classic dish.

- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 large onions
- thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic
- minced
- 1 egg
- beaten
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup beef broth (for deglazing)
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat and add the sliced onions. Cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes, adding minced garlic in the last minute. Remove from heat.
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, beaten egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
- Fold in the caramelized onions and half of the cheese into the meat mixture.
- Transfer the mixture into a loaf pan and shape into a loaf. Bake for 30 minutes.
- Add the remaining cheese on top of the meatloaf and return to the oven for an additional 10 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Remove from the oven, let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
For added flavor, serve with a side of mashed potatoes or a green salad. Make sure to let the meatloaf rest before slicing to retain its juices.
