  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

This French Onion Meatloaf combines the savory flavors of caramelized onions, tangy Worcestershire sauce, and rich Gruyère cheese for a comforting twist on a classic dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 large onions
  • thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • minced
  • 1 egg
  • beaten
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup beef broth (for deglazing)
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat and add the sliced onions. Cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes, adding minced garlic in the last minute. Remove from heat.
  3. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, beaten egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  4. Fold in the caramelized onions and half of the cheese into the meat mixture.
  5. Transfer the mixture into a loaf pan and shape into a loaf. Bake for 30 minutes.
  6. Add the remaining cheese on top of the meatloaf and return to the oven for an additional 10 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  7. Remove from the oven, let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For added flavor, serve with a side of mashed potatoes or a green salad. Make sure to let the meatloaf rest before slicing to retain its juices.
