Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion finely diced
  • 2 large carrots finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 pounds ground lamb or beef
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • ½ cup red wine
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 bay leaves
  • salt
  • pepper to taste
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 ½ pounds Russet potatoes peeled and diced into chunks
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½1 cup milk
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and carrots, cooking until softened.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  4. Add the ground meat and red pepper flakes, breaking it apart and cooking until browned.
  5. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, then add the tomato paste, red wine, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, bay leaves, and season with salt and pepper.
  6. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for about 10-15 minutes, until thickened. Stir in the frozen peas and remove from heat.
  7. Meanwhile, boil the potatoes in salted water until tender. Drain and return to the pot.
  8. Add the butter, milk, and salt to the potatoes, mashing until smooth.
  9. Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish and top with the mashed potatoes, smoothing the surface.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, until the top is golden brown.

Notes

Feel free to customize the filling with your favorite vegetables or switch up the meat for a different flavor. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
