- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium onion finely diced
- 2 large carrots finely diced
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 2 pounds ground lamb or beef
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- ½ cup red wine
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 bay leaves
- salt
- pepper to taste
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 2 ½ pounds Russet potatoes peeled and diced into chunks
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- ½–1 cup milk
- salt to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and carrots, cooking until softened.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add the ground meat and red pepper flakes, breaking it apart and cooking until browned.
- Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, then add the tomato paste, red wine, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, bay leaves, and season with salt and pepper.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for about 10-15 minutes, until thickened. Stir in the frozen peas and remove from heat.
- Meanwhile, boil the potatoes in salted water until tender. Drain and return to the pot.
- Add the butter, milk, and salt to the potatoes, mashing until smooth.
- Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish and top with the mashed potatoes, smoothing the surface.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, until the top is golden brown.
Notes
Feel free to customize the filling with your favorite vegetables or switch up the meat for a different flavor. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
