Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ½ cups (312 grams) all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup (25 grams) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 cups (400 grams) granulated sugar
- 1 cup (240 ml) vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup (240 ml) buttermilk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon black gel food coloring
- 8 ounces (226 grams) cream cheese
- ½ cup (113 grams) unsalted butter
- 3 cups (360 grams) powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 to 2 tablespoons milk or cream
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, mix the sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, buttermilk, vanilla extract, vinegar, and black gel food coloring until well combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat together the softened cream cheese and butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth. Adjust the consistency with milk or cream if necessary.
- Once the cakes are completely cooled, frost the top of one layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides of the cake.
- For the spiderweb design, use extra frosting and a piping bag; create spiderwebs on top of the cake for a spooky touch.
Notes
For a vegan version, substitute buttermilk with dairy-free milk mixed with lemon juice and use vegan butter for frosting.
