Zuccotto is a delightful Italian dessert cake that’s both creamy and rich, featuring layers of cake and luscious fillings, perfect for any special occasion.
Ingredients

liqueur
semisweet chocolate
dark chocolate
heavy whipping cream
instant espresso-coffee powder
Italian pastry cream
grated chocolate or chocolate curls for decoration
egg yolks

Instructions
- Prepare the Italian pastry cream by whisking egg yolks and sugar until pale, then mix in flour. Gradually add milk and cook over low heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Stir in vanilla and let cool.
- Melt semisweet and dark chocolate together until smooth. Whip the heavy cream and fold it into the cooled pastry cream along with the melted chocolate and instant espresso-coffee powder.
- Line a bowl with plastic wrap, layer the bottom with cake slices soaked in liqueur, and spread a layer of the cream mixture on top.
- Repeat layering cake and cream mixture until the bowl is full, finishing with a layer of cake. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight.
- Unmold the Zuccotto onto a serving plate, and decorate with grated chocolate or chocolate curls before serving.
Notes
For an even richer flavor, allow the cake to chill overnight. You can substitute the liqueur with coffee or milk for a non-alcoholic version.
