Ingredients
2 lbs Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes (thinly sliced)
1 medium onion (thinly sliced)
3 garlic cloves (minced)
4 tbsp butter
3 tbsp all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for gluten-free)
3 cups milk
1 cup heavy cream
2 cups shredded cheese (Cheddar
Gruyère
or blend)
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp paprika (optional
for garnish)
Fresh parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and garlic, sautéing until softened.
- Stir in the flour (or cornstarch) and cook for another minute, then gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream, cooking until thickened.
- Season the sauce with salt, black pepper, and half of the shredded cheese, stirring until melted.
- In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, half of the sauce, then repeat the layers, finishing with the remaining cheese on top.
- Cover with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Let cool for a few minutes before garnishing with parsley and paprika (if desired) before serving.
Notes
For a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with cornstarch. Ensure to slice the potatoes thinly for even cooking.
