Ingredients
4 cups whole milk
1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt
6 large egg yolks
2 tablespoons cornstarch
zest of 2 large lemons
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
1 cup powdered sugar
1–2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
Instructions
- In a saucepan, combine 4 cups of whole milk, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 cup of granulated sugar. Heat over medium heat until bubbles form around the edges.
- In a bowl, whisk together 6 large egg yolks, remaining 1/2 cup of sugar, and 2 tablespoons of cornstarch (if using) until smooth.
- Once the milk mixture is hot, slowly whisk it into the egg mixture to temper the eggs. Then, return the entire mixture to the saucepan.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
- Remove from heat and stir in the zest of 2 lemons and 1/3 cup of lemon juice. Pour the custard into serving dishes and let it cool.
- For the optional glaze, mix 1 cup of powdered sugar with 1-2 tablespoons of lemon juice until smooth, then drizzle over the cooled custard before serving.
