Description

A Grilled Cheese Sandwich is the perfect comfort food — golden, crispy bread filled with warm, gooey melted cheese. It’s quick, satisfying, and endlessly customizable. Whether you enjoy it plain or jazz it up with extras like bacon, tomato, or herbs, this timeless favorite always hits the spot.

Ingredients

Scale

Basic Ingredients:

2 slices of bread (white, whole wheat, or sourdough)

2 tablespoons butter, softened

2 slices cheese (cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, or your favorite)

Optional Additions:

1 tablespoon mayonnaise (for extra crispiness)

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (for tang)

Fresh herbs (basil, thyme, or parsley)

Sliced tomatoes or crispy bacon

Instructions

Preheat the Pan
Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. The pan should be hot enough to toast the bread without burning.

Prepare the Bread
Spread butter (or mayonnaise) evenly on the outside of each bread slice. Softened butter works best for smooth spreading.

Add the Cheese
Place the cheese slices on the unbuttered side of the bread. Mix cheeses if you’d like extra flavor and gooeyness.

Assemble the Sandwich
Place one slice of bread on top of the other, buttered sides facing out. Gently press together.

Grill the Sandwich
Place in the pan and cook 2–4 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy. Press gently with a spatula to melt the cheese evenly.

Rest
Remove from the pan and rest for 30 seconds to allow the cheese to set slightly before cutting.

Slice and Serve
Cut diagonally or straight in half and serve warm.

Notes

Best Cheese: Cheddar, Gruyère, or American melt beautifully.

Storage: Wrap leftovers and refrigerate up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet to keep crispiness.

Freezing: Wrap tightly and freeze up to 1 month. Reheat in skillet, not microwave, for best texture.

Variations:

Caprese: Add tomato and basil.

Bacon & Avocado: Add crispy bacon and avocado slices.

Spicy: Add jalapeños or Sriracha.

French Onion: Add caramelized onions.

Vegetarian: Add grilled vegetables and a drizzle of balsamic glaze.
