Deliciously creamy and cheesy French Onion Scalloped Potatoes bring a rich flavor profile to classic scalloped potatoes, enhanced with ranch seasoning and topped with crispy French onions.
Ingredients
1 ½ pounds gold potatoes or baby Yukon potatoes
washed and thinly sliced (â…› of an inch thick)
2 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons flour
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 cups milk
1 ½ cups shredded white sharp cheddar cheese
divided
½ packet ranch seasoning/dressing mix
salt and pepper to taste
optional: ½ red onion
thinly sliced
1 cup crispy French onions
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat, then stir in the flour and garlic powder to form a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the milk, cooking until the sauce thickens.
- Stir in 1 cup of the cheddar cheese, the ranch seasoning, salt, and pepper until smooth.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish, followed by half of the optional red onions and half of the cheese sauce.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, red onions, and sauce.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil, top with the remaining cheddar cheese and crispy French onions, and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Let cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
For a stronger ranch flavor, feel free to use the whole packet of ranch seasoning. Adjust salt and pepper according to taste.
