This Classic Marinara Sauce is a flavorful and easy-to-make sauce that pairs perfectly with your favorite pasta. With simple ingredients like San Marzano tomatoes, garlic, and fresh basil, it’s a staple in Italian cooking.

Ingredients

Scale

128-ounce can whole San Marzano tomatoes

certified D.O.P. if possible

¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil

7 garlic cloves

peeled and slivered

Small dried whole chile or pinch crushed red pepper flakes

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1 large fresh basil sprig or ¼ teaspoon dried oregano

more to taste

Instructions

  • In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the extra-virgin olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the slivered garlic and cook until fragrant and golden, about 1-2 minutes, being careful not to let it burn.
  • Add the dried whole chile or crushed red pepper flakes and stir for an additional minute.
  • Pour in the whole San Marzano tomatoes, breaking them up with a spoon. Add the kosher salt and stir to combine.
  • Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat and let it cook for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • During the last few minutes of cooking, add the fresh basil or dried oregano for added flavor.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning if needed before serving over your favorite pasta.

Notes

Feel free to customize the seasoning to your preference. This sauce can also be frozen for later use.
