Ingredients

4 large navel oranges or 5 small
2 cups water
1 ½ cups granulated sugar divided
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Peel the oranges, carefully removing the pith from the peel.
- Cut the peel into strips and set aside.
- In a pot, combine 2 cups of water and the orange peel. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Drain and repeat this process two more times to remove bitterness.
- In the same pot, combine 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water. Add the orange peel, vanilla extract, and salt. Simmer for about 30 minutes until the peels are translucent.
- Remove from heat and let cool in the syrup for a few hours or overnight.
- Strain the peels and toss in the remaining ½ cup of sugar until coated.
- Place the candied peels on a cooling rack to dry completely before storing.
Notes
Candied orange peel can be stored in an airtight container for several weeks. Great for garnishing desserts or enjoying on its own!
