1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

2 large eggs

1 cup milk

½ cup vegetable oil

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 cup boiling water

¾ cup unsalted butter

5 ⅓ cups confectioners’ sugar

1 ½ cups unsweetened cocoa powder

⅔ cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract


Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, combine the white sugar, all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients and mix until well combined.
  • Gradually stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth and well incorporated.
  • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  • For the frosting, beat the unsalted butter until creamy, then gradually add the confectioners’ sugar and cocoa powder, mixing until smooth.
  • Add the milk and vanilla extract and beat until the frosting is fluffy and easily spreadable.
  • Once the cakes are cool, frost the top of one layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the entire cake.

Notes

For an extra touch, you can add chocolate shavings or sprinkles on top of the frosted cake.
