Ingredients

1 (1/4-oz.) pkg. active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp.)
1 tsp. plus 3 Tbsp. granulated sugar

5 cups all-purpose flour
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. table salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup cold salted butter
cubed
1/2 cup shortening
cubed
2 cups whole buttermilk
1/4 cup butter
melted and divided
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar; let it sit until foamy, about 5-10 minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda, and remaining sugar.
- Cut in cold butter and shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the yeast mixture and buttermilk until just combined.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll to about 1/2 inch thick.
- Cut into desired shapes and place on a baking sheet.
- Brush tops with melted butter and bake in a preheated oven at 450°F for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Ensure the yeast is fresh for best results, and consider using a pastry cutter for more even butter and shortening distribution.
