1 tsp. baking soda

1/2 cup cold salted butter

cubed

1/2 cup shortening

cubed

2 cups whole buttermilk

1/4 cup butter

melted and divided


Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar; let it sit until foamy, about 5-10 minutes.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda, and remaining sugar.
  • Cut in cold butter and shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in the yeast mixture and buttermilk until just combined.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll to about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Cut into desired shapes and place on a baking sheet.
  • Brush tops with melted butter and bake in a preheated oven at 450°F for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
